 The Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) under the Ministry of Agriculture is at the apex of the    national agricultural research system (NARS). It has the responsibility to strengthen the national agricultural research capability through planning and integration of resources. It is the umbrella under which the entire Bangladesh agricultural research effort is coordinated. This involved cooperative activities in several ministries of government: Agriculture, Forest and Environment, Fisheries and Livestock, Rural Development, Education, Industries, Commerce, Science and Technology, etc.

Policies to guide BARC are made by a governing body which is headed by the Hon'ble Minister for Agricultural as its Chairman, with the Hon'ble Minister for Fisheries and Livestock and Hon'ble Minister for Environment and Forest as the co-chairman including Hon'ble Member of the Parliament, top officials of government ministries and research institutes, outstanding scientists, farmers representative as members. The implementation of the policies adopted by the governing body is the responsibility of the Executive Chairman of BARC and the Member-Directors and Directors of specific disciplines.

BARC is entrusted with the task of preparing the vision document and the national agricultural research plan. These are the guide for planning and conducting research activities according to the national priorities. Based on these the research institutes draws their master plan. BARC has the responsibility to coordinate research and foster inter-institute collaboration, monitor and review the research program of NARS institutes, assist institutes to strengthen research capacities, establish system-wide operational policies and standard management procedures and assure that each institute is optimally governed.

Bangladesh Agricultural University was established on 18 August 1961. The University is situated 4 kilometer south of the Mymensingh town and occupied 1200 Acres areas by the side of Old Brahamputra river. BAU consists of six faculties and 41 departments. The number of current academic staffs is 438 and students is 5,001. The BAU has already produced 14, 981 graduates, 5,124 postgraduates (M.Sc./M.S.) and 73 Ph.D.



BAU at a Glance:

Bangladesh Agricultural University was established as the East Pakistan Agricultural University on 18 August 1961. The present name was adpoted in 1972. The University is 4 kilometer south of the Mymensingh town and occupied 1200 Acres areas by the side of Old Brahamputra river. It consists of 6 faculties and 41 departments. Among them, 8 departments belong the faculty of Veterinary Science, 15 belong to Agriculture, 5 belong to Animal Husbandry, 5 belong to Ari-Econ & Rural Sociology, 4 belong to Agri-Engineering & Technology and 4 belong to Fisheries faculty. The number of total academic staffs is 394. The university has already produced 12, 028 graduates, 3,508 postgraduates (M.Sc./M.S.) and 44 Ph.D.

 Around 90 different research projects are now in progress under the supervision of BAU Research System (BAURES). The BAU is operating agriculture extension programmes in 22 villages of Mymensingh Sadar thana under the direct supervision of BAU Extension Center (BAUEC).The BAU already conducted 296 training & short term pre-service and in-service courses, including 14 international courses through the Graduate Training Institute.

The unversity is composed of six faculties covering all aspects of agricultural education and research. They are as follows: Faculty of Veterinary Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Faculty of Agricultural Economics & Rural Sociology, Faculty of Agricultural Engineering and Technology and Faculty of Fisheries

Moreover, there are some other academic & research components associated with the University, which are: Graduate Training Institute, Committee for Advance Studies and Research (CASR) and Bangladesh Agricultural University Research System (BAURES).
